South Korean electronics company Samsung is known as an innovator, having brought many technological developments to market over the years. Its approach to safety on trucks is apparently no exception.
Samsung has recently begun trialling rear-mounted video screens on the back of its trucks. A camera is placed on the front of the truck, and wirelessly relays real-time footage of the road in front onto the screen. The screen is large enough for drivers behind the truck to see clearly.
Drivers across the world get frustrated by being stuck behind a slower moving truck on single carriage roads where overtaking is difficult. In many cases, this leads to dangerous overtaking manoeuvres that can sometimes end in tragedy.
Samsung’s simple solution is designed to help drivers make safer decisions on when, and when not, to overtake. Not only is this safer for overtaking drivers, but for the truck driver as well, with the likelihood of accidents reduced through this simple but potentially effective idea.
The technology is currently on trial in Argentina – a country featuring many winding single carriage highways. It remains to be seen whether the technology is adopted elsewhere, but given its simplicity, the potential is certainly there.
