Transport for London's new Direct Vision Standard (DVS) is a safety initiative aimed at reducing road fatalities and serious injuries, particularly involving heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) over 12 tonnes.
Set to take effect on Monday 28th October 2024, the DVS requires vehicles with a direct vision rating below three stars to install or upgrade to a Progressive Safe System.
Microlise’s Direct Vision Standards (DVS) offering is designed to meet the new safety requirements set by Transport for London (TfL).
The Progressive Safe System integrates advanced technologies – including Artificial Intelligence (AI) – to improve HGV driver visibility and awareness, enhancing road safety.
Key features include:
- Near-side blind spot cameras
- In-cab camera feeds
- External audible warnings
- Radar-assisted AI sensors
- In-cab alerting systems
These technologies have reduced fatal collisions influenced by visibility by 75% since DVS was introduced. The European Commission expects safety measures like DVS to save an estimated 25,000 lives by 2038.
Non-compliance with these standards can result in a £550 penalty per infraction, making adherence crucial for operators.
