DFS Goes Live With Microlise Telematics in Boost to Fleet Efficiency

DFS, the UK’s largest upholstered furniture retailer, is aiming to improve the performance and safety of its fleet with the introduction of a new telematics solution from Microlise across its more than 360 delivery vehicles.

The rollout is delivering a full suite of reports to help reduce fuel and maintenance costs; and improve the safety of the company’s transport operation.

The furniture retailer, which has a long history manufacturing furniture in the UK going back almost five decades, trialled Microlise Fleet Performance earlier this year before opting to deploy the technology across its growing vehicle and trailer fleet.

Hardware, manufactured by Microlise, is being fitted fleet-wide and once installed will report real-time operational data on the location and operation of the fleet. A direct connection with the vehicle tachograph will enable driver identification via the web portal functionality, both in real-time and historically.

DFS has also deployed the Microlise Safety Module which will enable speed, direction, accelerator position, braking, ABS status, gears, cruise control and clutch to be recorded, giving an overview in the seconds before and after an incident.

“We are nearly six years in on our journey of digital transformation. Our aim is to have all of our data in the correct format so that we can use it. In the transport sector, Microlise is pioneering this same approach and therefore the link-up between our two companies makes sense,” said Russell Harte, Group Technology Director at DFS.

The furniture retailer, which floated on the London Stock Exchange for the second time in 2015, is the clear UK market leading retailer of upholstered furniture with a portfolio of over 110 stores.

“We ran a successful Microlise Fleet Performance trial earlier this year and are confident we will quickly make a return on investment by delivering greater efficiency. Fundamentally this helps us to provide the very best value and service for our customers – an objective which is always front and centre in our decision-making process,” added Harte.

Microlise, which is one of Europe’s largest telematics companies, has more than 350,000 active vehicle connections and works with 13 of the UK’s 15 largest retailers delivering telematics, technology and transport management solutions.

“Our customers help us to drive our product forward and innovate. With every deployment we gather greater expertise and a better understanding of the environment our customers operate in,” said Nadeem Raza, Chief Executive Officer, Microlise. “DFS has a long and proud history in the UK, helping to bring comfort to the lives of millions. We are happy to be in a position to help DFS to achieve its objectives.”
