A look at a multi-equipment installation into the fleet of Carlsberg delivery trucks by Bury System 8

Carlsberg operate a fleet of approximately 305 of their own delivery vehicles. These are a mix of rigid and tractor/trailer articulated vehicles. Each vehicle carries an Intermec CN3 mobile data terminal with attached removable printer. These two units are placed in the cab docking station for charging. The installations required a bespoke base plate that was bolted to the vehicles engine tunnel and two Ram Mounts were secured to provide pivotal mounts to both cradles. Two charging power looms were installed to keep constant power for the devices whilst they are docked in the cab.

A Bury System 8 handsfree kit with hot swappable charging cradle was installed for handsfree telephone dialing. An audio loom with radio mute was fitted so high quality voice calls were more audible in the vehicle. A reversing camera system was installed to provide rear view vision during reverse maneuvers. These involved mounting a 6” monitor above the drivers head next to the Tachograph with the looming running to the back of the vehicle. The camera was mounted above the rear roller door providing a clear wide angled view of the rear of the unit.

Finally, a Microlise telematics unit was fitted with CANBus connection and driver ID via the Tachograph link kit. This provides FMS data to the telematics server and enables detailed vehicle details to be recorded and analysed.

The main challenge was the tight delivery schedule that the body builders had to follow. This involved several stages of body building that the Handsfree engineers had to work around. Getting the reversing camera looms down the vehicle chassis was much easier and quicker than when the body had been built into the chassis. The installations in the front cab were possible at any stage of the build unless they were in the body shop with the batteries disconnected and or the cabs were tilted. Finally the rear camera work could only be completed after the coach building had been completed. Communication with the body builders was key and a schedule drawn up so we could work around their tight build plan.

The multi equipment installation included a handsfree kit, reversing camera, telematics unit and a combined data terminal vehicle dock with removable hand held printer.

Solution

The installation was broken down into four sections each being tackled by a different engineer. The camera mounting and loom runs were tackled together but required the vehicle to split into loom run before coach build and camera mounting after. The data terminal and printer were tackled along with the reverse camera mounting and lastly the telematics unit.
