Who are you and what is your role?

My name is Michael Lockwood, and I am Head of Projects (PE&NPI) here at Microlise. I currently lead a team of seven, and we work together to ensure that new hardware and devices, either our own or those from third party suppliers, are analysed and tested so that they are fit-for-purpose and aligned with our solutions.

How has your role changed since you joined Microlise?

Although my work has always been technical, I’ve held a number of different roles throughout my decade at Microlise. I have moved from software development to technical project management and then progressed up the management ranks. I have become increasingly involved in project and programme management and am now focused on new products and on people management. Microlise has allowed me to progress quite quickly, which I’m very grateful for. There is good leadership in the company; you are encouraged to take the career opportunities that are presented to you.

Why have you stayed at Microlise for the period you have?

I think it’s because of the ever-changing nature of the role. Microlise has supported my progression all the way along. In many ways, it feels like I’ve worked for different companies because of the sheer variety of the roles I’ve held. For me that’s a good thing, as work stays fresh and challenging all the time.

How would you describe the culture at Microlise?

There’s a real team ethos here and the culture is very supportive. Team support is an important issue because work here is demanding and challenging. The company has grown significantly and the dynamic has changed but thankfully, the culture has stayed the same. There’s also plenty of opportunity to get involved in community-related events  – I’ve taken part in Cycle South Africa 2017 as well as the Nottm Half Marathon Corporate Challenge in both 2017 and 2018.

What has been your career highlight during your time at Microlise?

That’s a difficult question to answer. I think for me, my greatest achievement is the move from delivery and working at the coalface, to working more innovatively and strategically to solve issues further up the value chain.

Our team looks at root causes and the ways we can iron out issues to produce and deliver better products for our customers. We are taking a much longer-term view and anticipating product issues before they arise.

What would you say to people looking to join Microlise?

I’d encourage people to consider a career with Microlise, particularly if they enjoy working smartly and thrive in a fast-paced environment. I’d say think strongly about a career here, if you want to make a difference every day. You’ll have the opportunity to stretch yourself and progress here.
