Before Microlise, I started out at Highways England, where I completed a two-year apprenticeship. I picked up several transferrable skills during that time, and with the support of my manager, I was able to build a strong application for the Business Analyst role at Microlise. I see Microlise being my first real professional role after education, and it’s been a fantastic shift moving from the public to the private sector. The journey’s been full of growth and so many opportunities that I didn’t expect.
My Journey at Microlise
Over the years, I’ve worked my way up the product ladder, always looking for the next challenge. From my initial Junior Business Analyst role, I naturally transitioned into a Product Owner role.
Thanks to the incredible mentorship from senior colleagues, I learned what it really takes to succeed in a product-focused role. Over time, I transitioned into a hybrid position: part Business Analyst, part Product Owner. It was a great way to bridge the gap between technical detail and strategic direction, and Microlise really supported that progression!
After spending nearly two years in the Product Owner role, the next step felt like a natural progression. A new opportunity in the team allowed me to step into the role of Product Manager. Since then, I’ve completed certified training, while continuing to learn through real-world experience and by building strong relationships across the business.
Life as a Product Manager
I’m now over three years into my journey as a Product Manager, and it’s been quite the journey. When I first started, I was focused on just one, single, app. Fast forward to today, and I now look after the entire suite of mobile applications! The role has grown into something much more strategic. It’s no longer just about features and fixes; it’s about defining where we want our mobile products to be in the next few years.
My focus is on shaping products that support drivers – ensuring they have the right information at the right time to work safely, efficiently, and with minimal friction.
One of the things I love most about being a Product Manager is how social and collaborative the role is. I work across so many areas of the business, from tech teams to customer facing departments. Building those relationships is key to being an effective Product Manager, and it’s something I genuinely enjoy.
It’s also exciting to work with such a range of customers, from ASDA to Waitrose, to companies in the healthcare sector, and even JCB… Where you might find us playing a round of golf!
Favourite Memories at Microlise
One of the things I love the most about working at Microlise is the global nature of the role. Back in January last year, I had the opportunity to travel to India for a few weeks. Since my whole team is based there, it was great to spend time face-to-face and build stronger connections. I recently had the chance to join our latest staff golf day in the UK, which is a brilliant way to catch up with colleagues outside of the office!
Looking ahead, I’ve got another exciting trip coming up, but this time to Australia. In August this year, I’ll be heading over for a few weeks to help support the business. It’s an opportunity to help shape things on the ground, offer strategic guidance and meet our Australian colleagues and customers!
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying?
If there’s one piece of advice I’d give to anyone considering applying to a role they don’t feel 100% “qualified” for – just do it. Don’t be afraid to apply! You likely have more transferable skills than you think, and the rest can be learned. What matters most is enthusiasm, a willingness to grow and the drive to take on new challenges! That mindset has helped me move forward in my career, and it’s something I always encourage others to do.
We’ve got a genuinely great team. We’re close-knit, supportive and there’s so much collaboration which makes the day-to-day not just manageable, but enjoyable. It’s the kind of place where you always feel like someone’s got your back, whether it’s your colleagues or even the Senior Leadership Team! That level of support really matters, especially when you’re trying to grow in your role.
Beyond the day-to-day at Microlise, what really stands out is how Microlise treats its people during life’s more difficult moments. Last year, I lost my dad. During this incredibly tough time, the business was amazing. There was no pressure or stress, I was given the space I needed to grieve and be with my family. That kind of support means so much, and it showed me the true character of the company I work for.
There’s a reason Microlise keeps earning its recognition and certifications, it’s genuinely a great place to work, filled with people who care, and I’m proud to be part of it!
