Following on from the successful participation in Cycle South Africa, a team of eight from telematics and transport management solutions provider Microlise will take on the Transaid Cycle Zambia challenge in 2018.
In the process, the team aims to raise a record amount for the transport industry’s charity, Transaid, founded originally by Save the Children, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, and HRH The Princess Royal.
Taking place between Friday 21st September and Sunday 30th September 2018, Cycle Zambia will see cyclists riding 490 kilometres – over just five days – from the capital city Lusaka to the breath-taking Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
Microlise has been a corporate supporter of Transaid since 2015 and since then has helped with the provision of telematics services for its bicycle ambulance initiative in Zambia, which takes pregnant women to medical facilities. Other projects are aimed at improving driving skills to reduce road deaths and accidents.
In Zambia, the risk of maternal death is 1 in 79, compared to 1 in 5,800 for women in the UK, according to World Bank data. Thanks to Transaid, more than 4,000 women have been transferred to a health facility by Emergency Transport Scheme (ETS) drivers – a programme making a real difference.
Money raised will also be used by Transaid to deliver driver training programmes, which seek to improve the standards of HGV drivers in a number of African countries. According to the World Health Organisation, the number of road traffic injuries and deaths in Africa have been increasing over the last three decades.
