Allied Bakeries has various policies on sustainability covering environmental concerns, health and nutrition, and community involvement.
You might not recognise the name Allied Bakeries but you’ll recognise their products. Allied Bakeries manufacture and distribute four bread brands – Kingsmill, Burgen, Allinson and Sunblest. It has its head office in Berkshire with production sites and distribution centres based around the UK.
Across the company in recent years, it has looked at its environmental efficiency and sustainability. It was the first bread company to gain certification to use the carbon reduction label on its packaging. The project, in 2009, involved three key Kingsmill brands (Great Everyday White, Tasty Wholemeal and 50:50) assessed against PAS2050 by the Carbon Trust Commitment for on-going carbon reduction. Allied has also carried out carbon footprint assessments on its flour production.
Logistics Director Paul Longley explains that the company has various policies on sustainability covering environmental concerns, health and nutrition, community involvement, looking after its people and ethical procurement, which are all covered under the company’s Corporate Responsibility agenda.
“A great example is our approach to Palm Oil. We’re a member of the RSPO (Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil), we have purchasing green palm certificates (supporting the production of RSPO certified sustainable palm oil), and work closely with ingredient suppliers to move to sustainable palm oil or replace palm in our ingredients. It is a cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team approach.
“We’re also now using flour milled from Conservation Grade wheat in our Allinson branded loaves. This involves wheat from fields where farmers leave bigger margins at the edge of their fields, allowing more space for wildlife to thrive.”
Paul highlights other areas in which the company has reduced its carbon emissions. He cites the insulation of exposed pipework at bakeries, the on-going move to fleet vehicles with Euro 5 EEV engines, the introduction of aerodynamic “teardrop” designed vehicles, and procedures to influence driver behaviour through various initiatives such as route tracking and automatic engine cut-off when idling.
In addition, Allied Bakeries has updated its plant and equipment with chillers replaced by those with minimal refrigeration losses and new ovens amongst other improvements. It has also fitted inverters to compressors to match air supply with demand, coupled with steam surveys and reduction of steam leaks. Energy-saving lighting has also been implemented when replacements are required, and each site has a comprehensive energy management scheme in place, which includes voltage optimisation.
Routemaster is used as the main transport planning tool, optimising miles per gallon and efficient driving methods. “We have been training all of our drivers to SAFED (Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving) standard throughout the past year as part of our Drivers CPC programme. “ adds Paul. Through on-board telematics supplied by Microlise, driving techniques are monitored in order to make further improvements in driver efficiency. Furthermore, all vehicle washes are conducted with recycling systems installed on the washing systems that have activated carbon filters.
