The driver reportedly failed to observe pre-warning lights, a level crossing, and boom gates, leading to the crash. The incident triggered a substantial emergency services response. The chart below shows the percentage increase in distracted drivers\u2019 response times &#8211; an undistracted driver typically reacts in 1 second.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;42158&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brake.org.uk\/get-involved\/take-action\/mybrake\/knowledge-centre\/mobile-phone-use#:~:text=Drivers%20who%20talk%20on%20phones,culpability%20in%20crashes%20%5B2%5D.&amp;text=attention%2C%20during%20which%20time%20your%20driving%20is%20impaired%20%5B3%5D.\">According to the Transport Research Laboratory, telephone use while driving (whether hand-held or hands-free) increases the likelihood of being involved in a crash by a factor of <strong>four<\/strong><\/a>, while texting increases crash risk by around <strong>23 times<\/strong>. The theory behind it is as follows; for every <strong>300,000<\/strong> acts of risky behaviour, there are <strong>300<\/strong> scary near misses, <strong>29<\/strong> acts that lead to a minor incident and <strong>one<\/strong> act that leads to a serious injury or fatality. A driver may have a habit of using a smartphone but is still allowing adequate following distance. On one occasion where insufficient distance is allowed, combined with the habitual use of a smartphone can lead to a serious collision.<\/p>\n<p>So, to prevent serious collisions, it\u2019s necessary to identify and prevent risky behaviours early. Footage can be requested in much the same way as with other ClearVision cameras to support any debriefs that take place.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Microlise products were in place to help deal with FNOL. The Incident Data Recorder offers granular level detail around what the vehicle was doing at the time of an accident.
