The processing power capability of a mobile data terminal (MDT) used in the cab for electronic proof of delivery/ collection or mobile workforce task management can also be used to provide automatic vehicle location capability running in the background. This requires the addition of a Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite receiver which can either be integral with the unit or connected to to it via blue tooth. The costs of adding tracking and telematics functionality to the MDT are minimal compared to providing a separate "black box" tracking and telematics system.
Using basic position, speed, direction & time information from the satellite, SofTrac can provide extra functions and information back to the host system. Soft telematic data can be determined by changes in position over time to give data such as mileage reports, over speed, harsh acceleration, harsh braking or unexpected stationary activity. If linked to the ignition, it can also indicate undesirable periods of engine idling. Comparison with geo-fence data can also be used to indicate arrival and departure from a particular delivery point as well as deviation from any pre-defined route.
