FFUK launches bid to quash August’s 3ppl fuel duty rise (by Laura Hailstone)

FairFuelUK (FFUK) has launched a major parliamentary bid to sink the August 3ppl fuel duty rise, but warns it cannot win without the industry’s help.

To get the 3ppl rise scrapped, an amendment to the Finance Bill is required. FFUK, along with the Freight Transport Association and the Road Haulage Association, have been working diligently since the Budget was announced to table an amendment.

It has gained the support of a group of cross-party MPs led by Scottish National Party MP Stewart Hosie, and last week this group began circulating a proposed amendment which scraps the rise.

FFUK founder Peter Carroll is asking everyone to email their MP via the FFUK website to urge them to support the proposed amendment. “We need to generate a massive head of steam behind this amendment. We need hundreds of MPs to show that they support it so that it has a chance of being debated and voted on.

“We are urging every truck driver, every transport manager, every haulage boss, every supplier, every maintenance provider to email their MP.”

In just seven days since the launch of the ‘email your MP’ push, FFUK has had 14,510 letters sent to MPs via its website.

“Our target is 25,000 letters – we’re 58% of the way there. If we reach that target we can win this, but we need everyone in the industry to act and support this push,” stresses Carroll.

To contact your MP, go to: bit.ly/ContactYourMP. It takes less than 60 seconds to do so.

Stop complaining, and back the FairFuelUK Campaign (by Mike Presneill – Presneill Tipper Contractors)

Record fuel prices over the last couple of months are taking their toll on increasing numbers of UK operators’ bottom lines. How far off is it, before you have to tell your workforce that their jobs have gone?

When will it be the last time you close your gates forever, because you can’t pay the bills? How many of you are reliant on the banks for financial assistance? And how many of you have them breathing down your neck each month, just to meet their repayments? A very high proportion, I bet! Life in the industry won’t improve while diesel prices are allowed to go unchallenged.

That’s why it’s time for everyone to back the FairFuelUK campaign. It is making our industry work better by getting fuel duty rates down or stabilised – they achieved last year’s freeze on duty. Peter Carroll and his team have done what no other group of people have ever done, and that is to bring together individuals and groups of people with clout.  These are people who operate in and around the periphery of the industry to work together to get its message into Parliament.

Our industry is being destroyed because of excessive fuel duty rates imposed on UK operators, making it almost impossible for them to show a profit for their efforts.
