Year in Industry: The Microlise Class of 2017

At Microlise, we are working with various Universities and institutions both in a research and development capacity as partners, but also to take students on, so that they can spend a year working in industry.

Over the last 12 months we’ve welcomed a number of placements and treat them as fully embedded members of the Microlise team, working on some of our most ambitious projects.

With places up for grabs again in 2018, we caught up with three of the current team from Middlesex University, Royal Holloway University of London and University of Leicester. In 2018, we’re certain to have more posts available, so if you’re interested in applying for a placement year at Microlise you can apply via the “Year in Industry” page.

BSc (Hons.) Computer Science.

How was the interview process?
I was interviewed twice by two Development Mangers. Both of them went very well. The interview environment was very friendly which reflects the working environment of the company.

Are you working on anything exciting?
Yes! I am working on a tool that would help the QA’s and the Sales Team.

Would you recommend Microlise to a fellow student?
Without doubt. The work environment is great, my colleagues and peers are very friendly. I am assigned a mentor who is extremely helpful and guides me every step of the way. And best of all, there is always someone bringing cakes!

Where would you like your career to take you?
Working with Microlise has given me the insight of how a company is structured, how a software is written for production and how to work in an Agile environment. These are a few skills one needs to become a team leader or perhaps a manager in the future.

Has working at Microlise helped you with your aims?
It has certainly given me the experience I need. I have understood the whole software life-cycle which in turn will help me in the future to take on more senior roles.

Anything else?
Microlise is a great company, they have been catering to students for years and know exactly what a student needs when they start their placement.

Vinay Vijay – Year in Industry Student

What are you studying and where?
Currently, I am studying Msc Data Science and Analytics at ‘Royal Holloway University of London’.

How was the interview process?
Had couple of rounds as part of my interview process. Had a great experience on my first round of interview which was at the careers fair. The staff members from Microlise were very friendly, they briefed me about the company and highlighted the roles I could pick which are relevant to my course of study i.e Big Data which excited me further. Interviewers assessed my technical expertise, which then followed with an additional round at the Microlise campus where I got my chance to showcase my coursework and knowledge around the subject.

Are you working on anything exciting?
I am part of a exciting research project on Big Data which is a naturally high priority project because of the benefits for Microlise and its customers. I had the opportunity to setup a Hadoop environment and work through various big data tools. I have done a lot of automation work around the process of real time streaming of data. In just a span of months I have managed to get a good understanding of the current Microlise systems. My analytics platform team has continuously been working on lots of research and development work around delivering key projects on the Big Data landscape.

I got an opportunity to work on various tasks starting from Initialising the cluster, loading the data to HDFS, executing the query, extracting the result, testing and debugging the solution and transferring the result to a visualisation tool to monitoring the solution. I also got hands on experience on Cloudera, Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, Apache Sqoop, Apache Hive, Impala, Oozie, Yarn, Kudu, Zookeeper,Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Team Foundation server and various other tools.

Would you recommend Microlise to a fellow student?
Microlise gives a lot of space for a Year in Industry student to develop his skills and widen his knowledge on the area of interest. The experience at Microlise will definitely help students to achieve greater success in their career. I would recommend aspiring student to avail this opportunity and make a great career move.

Where would you like your career to take you?
I look forward to excelling in my current field as a Data Analyst and aspire to be an architect who could drive change with his technical and management skills.

Anything else?
Microlise engaged me positively towards achieving my goals. It has helped me focus on my career aspirations. The company environment keeps me motivated towards my objectives.I have been involved with training and development and been recognised for my hard work which has lifted my spirit to deliver much more out of me.

Daniel Blissett – Year in Industry Student

Which university are you studying at?
University of Leicester.

What course are you on?
MComp Computer Science w/ Year in Industry (5 Year) but intend to drop to BSc Computer Science w/ Year in Industry (4 Year) when I go back.

How was the interview process?
Very short, interviewed for 15 minutes in Derby and came to Microlise HQ to show off some previous work. Very simple compared to other companies requiring various tests, video interviews and assessment centres.

Are you working on anything exciting?
Currently helping with creating microservices that will be deployed in the new Docker environments. Unlike many companies I am working on what is actually being produced rather than menial tasks. However that doesn’t mean my work isn’t varied enough, as I am still jumping between fixing bugs and completing other work coming from existing customers.

Would you recommend Microlise to a fellow student?
Yes, because you get the real industry experience rather than at other companies performing small menial tasks that they’d only ever really give to interns. It is important to me that here I am treated as a colleague rather than simply a student, but everyone is still supportive when I need it.

Where would you like your career to take you?
I intend to work as a software developer, however I am currently unsure of specifically where in the industry I would like to go. The work I am currently doing gives me experience for a wide range of things.

Has working at Microlise helped you with your aims?
Yes, it has given me the opportunity to use a wider range of technologies than what I have at university and unlike at university they are all technologies actually being used in the industry. I also feel I have developed my interpersonal skills effectively while I’ve been here due to the relatively small size of the company, which may be more difficult in giant multi-national corporations.

Anything else?
Close proximity to Nottingham which has good transport links to anywhere in the country, which is useful if you wish to go home or visit friends for a weekend. This in particular has helped me to settle into my new surroundings very easily.

Jack Perry – Year in Industry Student

Which university are you studying at?
Nottingham Trent University.

BSc (Hons.) Software Engineering.

How did you hear about the Microlise Year in Industry position?
I got to know about Microlise from a friend who also works here at Microlise as a Developer.

How was the interview process?
I was interviewed by a Development Manager and one of the Technical Leads. The interview went well and the whole process was pleasant and friendly.

Are you working on anything exciting?
I’m currently working on a tool for developers to test if a set of results shows whether a vehicle was speeding or not.

Would you recommend Microlise to a fellow student?
Most definitely, the work environment is ideal, especially for learning, and everybody is friendly. We get assigned a tutor who has been extremely helpful throughout. I’m never worried about asking for help when needed, or being stuck on something for too long.

Where would you like your career to take you?
Since working here, I have learnt a lot about what kind of environment I will be in once I finish University. Microlise has given me an insight into how a company works and what goes into it, and how to work as part of an Agile development team. Now I’ve experienced this, looking for a job after university seems a lot less daunting.

Has working at Microlise helped you with your aims?
Microlise has helped me considerably with achieving what I expected from the placement. I have been learning at an incredible rate, and not just the technical skills I’ve developed, but about the software development cycle too. I’ve also learnt about what it takes to progress your career.

Anything else?
A brilliant company to work for, a perfect environment to learn and progress, allowing you to achieve goals and set new goals.
